Red Eye & Bright Teeth Example

Many red-eye removal tools replace red-eyes with grey-eyes,
or with something else that is not flattering. For this example,
I did the following.
-
Zoom in so the eyes are very large.
-
Select both eyes with the Lasso tool - the 2nd eye by Shift-Lasso.
-
[optional] Select > Save selection and give it
a name for future modifications.
-
Select > Feather > size =1. I chose a very small feather
value because the eyes are very small. Without feathering, there
could be a noticeable edge artifact, like a tan line. For large selection
areas, you might want a feather size of 5 or 10 pixels.
-
Enhance > AdjustColor > ColorVariations. I then do
each of the following one at a time. Each time I view the result
outside of the dialog box so that I can determine the effects. It
is helpful to make the "marching ants" disappear by toggling with Control-H.
This just affects the visibility of the boundary - it does not affect the
selection.
-
Decrease Red 1 or 2 times for the Midtones
-
Decrease Red 1 or 2 times for the Shadows
-
Decrease Red 1 or 2 times for the Highlights
-
You might want to reduce the bright spots in the center of
the eye. This can be done several ways, but I used the Clone Stamp
tool with a 2 or 3 pixel radius, blend mode to Darken, and an opacity of
60%. There are easier ways for this part.
To whiten the teeth:
-
Zoom in so the mouth is very large.
-
Select the teeth with Lasso tool.
-
Select > Feather size =1
-
Enhance > AdjustColors > Hue/Saturation and then slide the
lightness to the right to about 15 or so. Do not over brighten teeth
because they will look phony. Use Control-H to remove the "marching
ants" so that you can see the results.
